Bluerow Homes’ Guide to GDPR

The General Data Protection Regulation (or GDPR for short) is a really positive step towards you having more control over how your data is used and how you're contacted. The changes will also help to better protect your personal data.

To make sure you're ready to make your choices, we've created a handy guide that will help explain the changes and what they mean for you.

GDPR brings big change to the UK’s privacy data law
Every time you browse or shop online, like or comment on social media or use an app, data about you is generated. The EU’s new General Data Protection Regulation ensures that your personal data including postal and email addresses, phone numbers, medical and financial information are better protected. By May 25th this year, all businesses who hold your personal data are required by law to ensure that they are GDPR compliant.

GDPR provides you with more control over how your data is used
If a business holds data about you, whether it’s just your name or highly sensitive information, you will have better visibility on how up-to-date and accurate your data is and have greater control over how it is used. You will also have the right to decide whether a business processes your personal data.

You control how you are contacted and who by
You should be asked for consent by any organisation who holds your personal data on exactly which updates relating to their products and services you want to receive and how you want to receive them, whether it’s by phone, social media or email. This request for consent must be straightforward and as simple as possible to understand.

It will be easier to opt out
GDPR will give you better control of withdrawing. If you decide that you would rather not be contacted by a certain business, it will become a lot easier to change your preferences about the information you want to receive and by which method. If you opt out businesses must delete any of your data that is no longer relevant.

You will be greater protected
Any organisation who holds your personal information must notify you within 72 hours if, for any reason, your privacy is threatened. Businesses are at risk of being penalised with large fines if they can’t prove they have the correct systems and marketing processes in place to protect your personal data.
